I don’t usually read pirate books but this was enjoyable. It started to kind of drag in the middle, but I was rooting for Jacquotte and her friends so much that I had to see how it ended. I also feel like the ending was rushed and anticlimactic. Like the majority of the book is leading up to this huge showdown between Florian and Jacquotte and when it finally happened it was over in like two pages.
Also, I couldn’t completely buy the relationship between Teresa and Jacquotte. I don’t feel like we knew enough about either of them or the reasons why they were so infatuated with each other to be invested in their relationship. They were cute tho lol.

This book put me through itttt sheeeeesh.
Set in 1950s Florida, peak Jim Crow, Robbie is sent to a reformatory school for boys after an incident involving a white boy. We are with with Robbie during his time at the school and his older sister, Gloria, as she does everything in her power to get Robbie released.
Robbie’s time at the school is brutal, horrific and almost made me shed a few tears. All the while, Due’s writing has you hopeful that all will be alright. Gloria and Robbie both face just some of the atrocities Black people endured at the hands of white people post-slavery and they face them with defiance and bravery that not even adults today could muster. Due’s writing is gripping, engaging, visual, emotional while still being hopeful. Though the 500+ pages may seem daunting, not one page is wasted. It has you hooked from start to finish and I can’t wait to read more from her.
