This review doesn't give any direct spoilers, but I do talk about the general quality of the plot, so if you prefer to know NOTHING of the plot, proceed at your own risk
As with A Little Life, this book gave me a lot of emotional damage, but less so. While I struggled to get into it for the first 1.5 sections, the rest of it was just so good (and made up a solid two thirds of the pages) that it really redeemed it for me. The writing in those sections was so beautiful and so insightful. Yanagihara manages to articulate abstract feelings and ideas so well. I was really able to invest in the characters and the plot at that point, and, without giving spoilers, I was literally holding my breath at the end.
I know a lot of people found A Little Life just too depressing, and I would suggest they give To Paradise a try. Like A Little Life, it discusses some of the hard things in life, but does so in a much more subtle way. My only gripe with this book was that at times the plot was just a little too open ended for me. It's probably a book you read more for prose and the quality of the characters than the plot resolution from section to section. Other than that, the issue I had of not being that invested in the characters cleared up about 40 percent of the way in (which is admittedly quite a lot of pages since it's such a long book).
Overall, this was one of those books that you have to have faith in and stick with for a little bit (or a long bit lol) but really pays off in the end.

I am on the third now, but at this stage I think the first in Manhattan is my favorite so far.
