I’m enjoying it, but it feels like the books in this series are too short. I love the characters, and I wish we had more time to get to know them!

The Coven was a dark and atmospheric read that pulled me in with its moody worldbuilding and blend of witchcraft, secrets, and romance. I’d rate it four stars for the way it balances a lush, eerie atmosphere with a story that keeps you turning the pages.
I was hesitant to pick this book up because it looked like a short read and I wasn’t sure how invested I’d be. I’m glad I gave it a chance.
The strength of this book lies in the way Harper Woods builds tension. The gothic undertones and slow-burn pacing give the story a heavy, immersive feel, and I loved how the setting itself felt almost like a character. The magic system is intriguing, and the relationships that form in the midst of that tension give the book emotional weight.
At times the pacing could feel uneven, with some slower stretches, but overall it worked with the book’s dark, lingering tone. The characters had layers, and I especially enjoyed how their vulnerabilities were woven into the supernatural elements.
If you’re in the mood for something witchy, and atmospheric, The Coven delivers. It’s escapist in the best way. A book you can sink into and let yourself get swept up by its shadows.

I’m surprised at all of the mixed reviews on this. Maybe it’s because I’ve read such terrible romantacy lately that I didn’t go into this with great expectations but the writing was a pleasant surprise. Here’s my spoiler- free review: The protagonist is a refreshing rebellious foul-mouthed badass. Love that she’s curvaceous and resourceful unlike all the fragile and frail female protagonists I’ve encountered in some recent popular fantasy I’ve read. I loved the relationship she has to nature and the balance of magic that takes place in the book that a lot of witchcraft books seem to lack. The writing also had great pacing and description, evoking some gorgeous imagery of the setting and plant life. The way magic was associated with all the elements had some good world-building and lore creation, and the spicy content did not hold back. Definitely really hot with the ownership / enemies to lovers angle with a really surprising ending. My rating is still a 4/5 despite how much I enjoyed reading this because I feel like we only got a fleshed out character build of the protagonist. The peripheral characters were so intriguing, both Vessels and other students alike with not much attention given to them. I would have loved for more interaction than just the two love interests but maybe the sequel will have that. I’m starting the second one today because I’m totally invested in this story!

I read this incredible series when I was younger and loved the whole thing start to end. I have the urge to re read it to see if it holds up to the memories of my adolescence but was wondering if anyone else has read it? I would love to know your thoughts on it

Did the book just decide to become a philosophy major at the end?

This is one of the best horrors I’ve read in a while, just the pacing alone makes for an engrossing read. From start to end there’s never a lull in the storytelling and two of the female protagonists, one being a black lesbian cop in a small vacation town, has some of the best inner narratives I’ve read in a long time. The ending was also so surprising! Highly recommend if you’re looking for a cozy but gory winter horror

Why is everyone growling and purring and hissing and doing things «animalistically». Leave me alone 😭
