This book, which predates dracula by 2 decades, was literally what i wanted from dracula. if dracula is the closeted gay misogynistic version of vampyres, carmilla is our sexy, gay, yet terribly horrific version. not only was this scary and sexy, le fanu has some really amazing words in here. its short and poetic and engaging throughout. you can tell le fanu loves lore and loves women which was great to read.

this was my first absurdist book. i really enjoyed it. from my commonplace: "Meaning is inperceptible.. yet somehow humans perceive it as being discoverable (through god, moreality, enlightenment). The contradiction of meaning being inperceptible yet discoverable bars us from finding it. Absurdity is when you keep asking why, yet the urge to as remains"
Camus shows us to stop looking for meaning and learn to let go of the question entirely. Move past values altogether. If a world has no meaning, morality and values dont matter. What then, are humans capable of? Thinking about this within the context of Camus' world living in occupied France Algiers, i cant help but think of the impact this had on readers at the time witnessing the war and holocaust.
"Maman died today. or yesterday. i dont know."
