Seeing as this is such a widely loved and lauded series, expectations were high (I’m also a big Babel and Yellowface fan so, doubly so for me). Sadly this didn’t live up to the hype I built up in my head. When I factor in the fact that this is Kuangs debut novel she wrote as a teenager on college break, this book is incredibly impressive. But, lore aside, there were pacing issues (some very slow sections, and an abrupt change in theme and tone between part I and II), some choppiness in the writing, and underdeveloped concepts.
Poppy War tackles huge themes - it’s wildly ambitious, and I wish we dove into say 3 themes rather than grazing 10. I’ll continue on with the series as I suspect the depth comes, as this very much felt like a set up book.
Overall, I admired and appreciated this more than I enjoyed it.

the intimacy of enemies obsessed with each other being brought together by war is so delicious
