This was beautiful. So poetic, and so... ok I'm gonna be honest I have no idea what that was. Both in the sense of 'I didn't understand that at all' and 'no but actually what were they. Were they human mutants. Were they cyborgs... WHAT WERE THEY.
I think it did have an underlying tone of beauty, I just struggle to get past the poetic nature to focus on the plot.
I think I vaguely understood what happened, but will definitely need to reread this at some point.

It was fine. I guess. It was SUCH a slow burn, and I honestly got quite bored in the middle. This was the first book I read in the When in Rome series, and I don't think I missed anything from not having read the others.
The ending was quite cute, and I was invested and excited, but as mentioned, it just took a long time to get there. I'm interested to read the other books in the series to see how they compare.

I think this book had a lot of potential, it just felt a bit flat. I didn’t really feel attached to any of the characters, and didn’t entirely see how they really connected either, other than the occasional interaction.
It felt like it was missing all the suspense that comes with a murder mystery and things kind of just happened in a very logical order with no surprises.
I thought it was picking up in the ending chapters, but then the thing happened and it went back to being flat.
