On the Calculation of Volume I

Did not finish. This is one of those historical romances that has high ratings but is actually quite terrible. The author makes a point of making the male mc silly. But he is silly in a way that is not endearing, but childish, annoying, and pathetic. A silly male character needs to have other strong characteristics to recommend him, and perhaps he eventually develops or reveals them, but I was not enticed to read more to find out. The female mc is even more insufferable. The male mc’s aunt, however, is insufferable in a way that made the story stronger. She introduced real stakes that strengthened the protags’ characterizations. In all, despite good writing, the plot is hollow and the characters are forgettable and soulless. I don’t recommend it.

Love me like one of your Regency boys
A growing historical romance book list for the weary bookish time traveler. Not limited to the Regency era.

Check out Publishers For Palestine for some free Palestinian books!
What books have you enjoyed or are hoping to get to soon?
Two of my faves are: Rifqa by Mohammed El-Kurd The Moon That Turns You Back by Hala Alyan
And one that's very high on my list is The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappe.

Hamnet is one of my new favourite novels of all time. Maggie O’Farrell’s prose is so lyrical and full of whimsy; perfectly earthy and witchy.
I love how she brews language to ensorcell the reader into 16th century England, to people who must be approached sideways: A Latin boy, whose son remains an ephemeral echo in the literary world, whose wife shifted our perspective so thoroughly in this speculative, atmospheric retelling…to an enchanting botany of cures: “valerian, campion, dog rose, wood sorrel, wild garlic, river flags.”
I want to re-read this one day alongside Silvia Federici’s “Caliban and the Witch.” The tension between Agnes and the plague physician on pages 146-149 was so telling.
Highly, highly recommend.
