This is not your average historical fiction. It asks the question: What if Lady Jane Grey had not died after only 9 days on the English throne? (but with a twist!)
This book added magic, comedy, and adventure to the otherwise tragic tale of the “Nine Day Queen”. I liked the concept of Ethians, especially being set in 16th century Europe.
Yes, the authors used a lot of modern vocabulary but I think it actually complimented the story well. The narrator was a character all on their own, breaking the fourth wall at times. I think the authors did a great job of researching the background and then weaving together their silly and whimsical reimagining of the story.
Tip: I highly recommend the audiobook. The comedic timing just hits so well with Katherine Kellgren’s performance.
“Imagining someone as more than human does much the same work as imagining them as less than human: Either way, the ill are treated as fundamentally other because the social order is frightened by what their frailty reveals about everyone else’s.” Wow. This book has been so interesting and thought-provoking so far. The audiobook is great!
