The two voices are so similar, I’m struggling to remember whose chapter it is.

We’re definitely leaning into the idea of “enemies” very heavily here, in a way that honestly makes me not a big fan of either character. Ines is obsessive and her inner dialogue feels very immature, while Chloe is mean, throws temper tantrums, and is a bad sport. The whole meshing of the friend group, the social media posts…. everything just feels so unnecessarily messy and dramatic so quickly at a point where the characters are still pretty shallow.

On the onset, I’ll say I had both the audio and the ebook and I cannot recommend the audio. I found the narrator’s voice work of the Black cook and her husband to be very odd, accent and tone wise, and it REALLY distracted me from the story.
One of my favorite T Kingfisher horror books yet. This one lacks a lot of the typical comedic relief that you find in her writing, although there were a few moments here and there. I liked how deeply we went into the anxiety of the main character, with her inner voice battling between actually very reasonable levels of caution and long-standing anxiety, self-doubt, and negative self-talk.
This is fairly slow moving until the very end, with a few twists you will almost certainly see coming a mile away and a few others which are a little more mysterious. The ending, as is typical with Kingfisher, wraps everything up fairly tidy while still leaving both lasting psychological damage on the characters and a little bit of an ominous threat lurking.
CW for domestic violence, racism, BUGS, religious-based judgement/talk, light gore, mild (described second hand and for only a small bit) pregnancy horror, death, harm to animals.
Thank you to the publisher for the gifted copy.

Not sure how I feel about a white narrator doing a black southern accent. The other southern accents are a bit grating as well.
