While I do love a descent into madness story, I wish I could say I loved this, but I just thought 90% of it was boring :/ The 10% did have a pretty creepy aspect to it, but as this is a horror book, I needed moreeeee. I also will say it is really hard for me to get into older books and this one just felt really wordy and dated at times. (Maybe my brain just isn’t big enough for this)

This book is one that i know im going to think about for a long time. I loved the writing in this book so much, there are so many lines that i loved that fricken HIT. Like I love when a book makes me reflect on my own life and choices. I feel like sometimes when books become metaphors for real problems in our own world it can feel really daunting and although the content was really heavy, I feel like the author did such a good job with the magic system and how the story moved. The complexity in the dynamic of the main characters really got me and I found myself in such a love hate relationship with the main character because she was so morally gray but I feel like the author wrote her inner battle so well. The only thing that lagged I want to say is the pacing sometimes, but I feel like that was needed to kind of digest all the information, anyway great fricken read I can’t believe this is a standalone

if this isn’t a parallel to our world and the way so many people, animals, the earth, etc. suffer for our convenience, carelessness, willful ignorance to what’s going on within our own comfortable bubble of life… ☕️

Feels like we’re on the road to the 2 different types of marginalized people coming together to shit on their oppressors storyline and I’m here for it all

I'm not totally sold yet. The history is very intriguing to me and I genuinely want to find out the secrets of this city, but I'm not super interested in the main character yet. I get that she isn't necessarily supposed to be likable but I don't find myself strongly rooting for her when she's so anti-every-other-woman-but-me. I feel like in this sort of misoginistic setting, being totally on the FMC's side is kinda the point? Reading other people's reviews is keeping me going more than the book itself so far.
