I don't like giving 5 stars but this was one of my faves of the year so far!! 

Let me start by addressing the Fourth Wing comparisons — I didn't see it. Beyond dangerous physical trials, a military-ish setting, and a human-creature bond, Dire Bound is entirely its own thing. That label undersells this book and I'd encourage you to go in with completely fresh eyes.

What Sable Sorensen has built here is a conspiracy wrapped inside a spicy romantasy and, and, AND!! The hints are THERE from page one — the subtle power dynamics, Killian's carefully chosen pet name 🤮, the suspicious timing of certain events, the characters who answer questions just obliquely enough to make you pause… I spent the entire book pinning small strange details that paid off 💥explosively 🤯 by the end. 

Meryn is a FMC whose blind spots feel psychologically real rather than contrived. She's sharp about everything except what she most wants to be true — and she frustrated me to my CORE! I wanted to grab her by the shoulders approximately forty seven times. But that frustration is the point. It's earned. It's human. It's what happens when someone is so determined to protect something that feels good that they override every instinct telling them the truth. I understood her even when I wanted to shake her 🤷‍♀️

Anassa!! 🐺 Oh I love her. I KNEW something was going on and I can't imagine how frustrating it must've been for her (and some other characters) to do what they did knowing what they knew all along!! 😱😬🫠

And Stark 🥵 He delivers a slow burn so restrained and so charged that the bonus chapter from his POV felt like finally exhaling after almost 600 pages of held breath. He sees her!! That man was communicating volumes with little sprinkled hints topped with snark and I felt every single word he couldn't say. The tattoo scenes…gotdayum

I was FERAL by the end.

It's EVERYTHING. 👌🫶🙌

I'm DYING for book 2!

I was tee-hee-ing and kicking my feet from start to finish!

What really won me over was how well the insta-love trope was handled. Without giving away any spoilers...Bennett makes the connection between Tegan and Atlas feel genuinely earned even within the compressed timeline. Their banter is fun, and Atlas's soft swoony energy underneath all that fur and muscle is adorable. I loved that he's the one carrying vulnerability around body image. It was a refreshing flip without getting too problematic. Tegan is equally lovable: confident, funny, without going too overboard into "I'm not like other girls" energy.

My only minor gripe is Atlas's pet name for Tegan, which personally made me cringe a little every time. I get that this is totally subjective, and it clearly didn't stop me from devouring this book!

It was sweet, spicy, and low-angst that cleansed my palate between heavier reads! 🥰
