I forgot that we get sent emails for the Substack when we sign up so I was surprised when it showed up in my inbox. I clicked on it out of curiosity and found it's actually pretty interesting that we're going to be getting little tidbits on the thought processes and inner workings of PB :) Being in-the-know about Jennifer and Lucy's developments is making it feel even more like we're our own little (or, not so little) book club lol

I've been hearing lots of discourse lately on books being "banned" - essentially not as available for public access. What are your thoughts on it? Have you read any books that have been "banned" ?

So I'm a firm believer that while reading for fun and choosing books you know you'll probably like, reading to broaden our minds is super important (I DO have a degree in literature and teach middle school English, why do you ask?). Once we're grown up and out of school and no one makes us read anything at all anymore, nothing stops us from reading the same type of books.
(Some people don't read at all! Shocking, I know!)
So my question is this: How often do you choose a book because it's not what you normally read? And do you have an example of one where you surprised yourself by really enjoying it?
For me it was "Girls Against God" by Jenny Hval, which is much more creative nonfiction-y in writing style than I normally enjoy. It's also the wildest and most anarchic book I've ever read in my life, lol

I'd love to hear folks' favorite indie publishers! Sharing a few of mine: AK Press, Haymarket Books, Interlink Publishing, and Pluto Press.
