a solid work of feminist literary fiction that delves deep into japanese society and challenges preconceived notions about women, sexuality and body image. while the plot is kept moving by a murder mystery, the novel soon becomes something else, something deeper. it also offers a great glimpse into the world of journalism in japan and how women are treated in the workplace.

one aspect of this book that i am absolutely loving is the inside peek at rikaās career as a journalist. as someone who is currently working in the industry, i am so fascinated at the inner workings of a japanese newsroom (even if it is fictional). the fact that rika has never had an article that is written by herself published is crazy! what do you mean she does all the work and someone else takes her research and writes it up! despite her working at the magazine for such a long time, she is still not trusted! insane! so so interesting. āHowever conceited it might sound, she sensed that the articleās success wasnāt solely down to the fascination with Kajii as a subject. It was because sheād put in the time, and stuck with it until she was satisfied. Even if that didnāt mean much to other people, she planned to keep on working like that in the future, honing her own unique style. Would that be possible at the Shumei Weekly?ā

thereās a trend going around on letterboxd where people are making lists featuring their favourite films from every year that theyāve been alive, and i wanted to do a similar concept but with books (and thereās no better place to try it out than on pagebound!!) i have created my list by the novelās release date, so my 2015 favourite was released in 2015, but i realise that it takes a good minute to put together so feel free to just do your favourite from each year and ignore release date! here are my favourite books from every year in the past decade: 2015: a little life - hanya yanagihara 2016: crooked kingdom - leigh bardugo 2017: if we were villains - m.l. rio 2018: my year of rest and relaxation - ottessa moshfegh 2019: daisy jones and the six - taylor jenkins reid 2020: midnight sun - stephenie meyer 2021: people we meet on vacation - emily henry 2022: tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow - gabrielle zevin 2023: penance - eliza clark 2024: empire of the damned - jay kristoff 2025: atmosphere - taylor jenkins reid what are yours? :)

I am over the moon to share that the app is officially live on both iOS and Android!!
We've quite literally poured our blood, sweat and (lots of) tears into the app development over the past 9 months and we could not be more thrilled for everyone to experience it!
We're still being indexed in app store search so you may have to scroll to find us, or type in Pagebound: Social Book Tracker. Here's links to iOS and Android: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pagebound-social-book-tracker/id6751526412 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.pagebound.app
There are quite a few improvements and new features in the app, including:
This is the first release, so there will be many more additions and improvements to come. (PS for Android users: we're aware of two bugs related to library imports from Goodreads/Storygraph, and issues with editing read dates - these have already been resolved and are pending Google approval for release.)
We owe a huge thank you to our beta testers who worked diligently over the last month to report hundreds of bugs and help us get the app prepared for release. A huge round of applause to them.
We hope you love the app as much as we do; it definitely makes engaging on PB so much more convenient and fun. If you have a great experience with the app, we'd love if you'd consider supporting us through Pagebound Royalty; Lucy and I have worked for $0 over the past year to bring the app and website to fruition, and have been covering business costs with our savings accounts. Your contribution means we can continue to work full-time on Pagebound without influence from investors or advertisers, and keep Pagebound 100% for readers by readers. Thank you so much to all the Royalty who have already contributed; it truly means the world to us and keeps Pagebound online!
ok now go download the app and tell us what you think!
Happy Reading, Jennifer & Lucy
PS - leaving us a review in app stores also helps tremendously :)

really enjoying the interesting view of japanese culture that this novel is offering, especially in regards to sexism and body image. itās a big and fascinating contrast to a lot of the cozier translated books that have been releasing in droves, of which there is a place for as well, of course. āPleasantly full as she was, Rika felt like crying. She might dine with someone, but at the end of the meal they would go their separate ways. She couldnāt stay with that person forever. Even with her stomach full of warmth and the taste of delicious food lingering on her tongue, she remained alone.ā

iām actually obsessed with rika, she hasnāt been wrong yet!! āRika felt that a boyfriend was someone you should meet only at those times your needs perfectly corresponded.ā š¤

Are you one of those people who only reads one book at a time or do you have a bunch on the go at once?
I think of myself as a polyreader (and I blame it on my ADHD). I have 14 on the go at the moment, although one of those is a reread. If you do read more than one book at a time - do you ever have problems picking up from where you left off?

definitely the type of book that you have to knuckle down and pay strict attention to, just in case you miss any of its nuances. very interesting writing style so far though! also rika⦠i know what you are⦠š : āThe itchy, jealous feelings that Rika had once harboured towards her friendās spouse had by now died down ā though it was true to say that when sheād seen Reiko in her wedding dress, Rika had felt as though a piece of her own self had been stolen away.ā

An introduction to the Romantasy genre, these books are part of the cultural zeitgeist or the 'canon' that many would recognize. Look for more niche titles in later Starter Pack volumes.
