I’m glad I didn’t DNF this one early on! It started out a bit rough for me—the world-building was cool, but the writing felt a bit off, and the FMC, Harlow, made some incredibly naive and frustrating decisions right out of the gate. However, I pushed past the first 30%, and this massive book really picks up.

What kept me hooked was Henry. He is an incredibly smart, cunning, and relatable character, and I loved watching him masterfully maneuver the politics of this world. The dynamic between him and Harlow is a slow burn. At times, the emotional pacing felt a bit agonizing—they spend so much time circling each other, and some of the spicy scenes felt a little dissonant with Harlow’s overall coldness (plus, the specific vibe and kinks in the spice weren't entirely my cup of tea).

By the end, the book throws a ton of twists and turns at you. While a few of those final reveals felt a little messy, wrapped up too neatly, or required a bit too much suspension of disbelief regarding how Harlow connected the dots, the payoff was worth it. It was highly satisfying to watch Harlow finally unravel and learn to trust.

If you like complex political maneuvering and genuinely clever leads, give this one a chance—just be patient with the slow start.
