Iâve read all the other books in the grishaverse so I was glad to be able to finally read this one. It was truly a beautiful but sad story with amazing illustrations. I love that we get to see the complexity of the darkling even more, further showing that not everything is good vs evil.

I felt this book to be lacking the cozy feel that other books of this genre have. I found it difficult to connect with any of the characters and it overall felt quite shallow. I found the first chapter in particular to be quite misogynistic which ruined the rest of the book, making it hard to get into it. The actual writing itself was incredibly repetitive, with the same points and remarks being made over and over again. I felt that each new chapter didnât really add anything new to the story. I would have loved to see some of the detective work going in, as the actual premise of the book seems interesting and underexplored. Overall, it was disappointing.
