Hmm, this one is hard for me because there are genuinely many moments that I quite like in this book, but, overall, it lost me in too many places. Mostly, it felt like this book was setting up for later books, which put a layer between me being invested in the current story.

I really enjoyed this book! I had a friend recommend it to me and they referred to it as ‘romantasy but hitting a lot of the notes that romantasy misses for me’ and that was a pretty decent callout imo. While it wasn’t torrid, the romance, the dragons, and the dragon rider school all felt familiar, but told through a strongly anti-colonial viewpoint. In general, it was a very strong story with interesting characters!

This continues to add to my reasons I need to read the singing hills cycle. Nghi Vo writes so beautifully and her horror descriptions are so vivid. It was an interesting take on Gatsby with fun plays off the characters and a darkly magical setting to blend with the loss of the gilded age through the Great Depression and into WW2

This was a fun and quick read. I loved the blending of eternal knights of the round table with a near future climate catastrophe world, and the characters were well written and their various different motivations were fun to see clash. There are many good things about this book, but I had a difficult time with the latter half of the book. It made promises and delivered, but the ending somehow didn’t feel satisfying even though it did what it set out to do. Still, I enjoyed the book and the humor and setting felt very refreshing!
