I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would.

My two issues that prevent it from being a 5-star review are:

    1. the constant use of “cuz” instead of because kind of irks me. I don’t know if this is just Jennette’s style or if it’s intentional in some way, but it’s enough to drag down a .5 star.

    2. This book is very impactful, but I’m not sure if it’s truly unforgettable. One of my favorite books of all time is My Dark Vanessa, and this one kind of felt like the same kind of book, just not as well-written. Don’t get me wrong, Jennette writes beautifully, but it’s less of my style than My Dark Vanessa.

Overall, I enjoyed this and had a couple moments that caused my eyes to widen and wonder what I just read. I enjoy the subtle theme of consumerism, which I found unique. I don’t think I would re-read, but it’s a great debut fictional novel.

“I’m used to the person I’m dating, or sleeping with, or whatever it is, telling me all the things I ought to know instead of getting to know me. It’s how men, or boys, or both, communicate.”

Jennette McCurdy, did you have to call out my dating history in this one?

    The Beheading Game: A Novel

    The Beheading Game: A Novel

    Rebecca Lehmann

Disgraced. Beheaded. And out for revenge . . .We all know what happened to Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. But what if she woke up the day after her execution and took it upon herself to seek justice?“Nobody was surprised at Anne’s conviction. The world loves to put a woman in her place.”The Beheading Game begins in the hours after Anne Boleyn’s beheading, when she wakes to find herself unceremoniously in an arrow chest, her head wrapped in linen at her knees. Discarded by King Henry VIII for not being able to give him a male heir, reviled by Cromwell for being too smart for her own good, and executed based on trumped-up charges, Anne escapes the tower, sews her head back on, and sets out on a quest for vengeance.Traveling in the guise of a commoner, with the help of a prostitute, Anne navigates the London streets she never before walked and soon realizes how little she knew about life in the real world. If Kelly Link had teamed up with Hilary Mantel, the result might be The Beheading Game. An epic journey through the wilds of British royal history and a prescient reminder that “mouthy” women have always been punished, The Beheading Game finally allows one of history’s most maligned women a chance to tell her side of the story.

“Some people choose to further their education, I choose perfume.”

I don’t know why, but this took me out. We’ve all been there, spending most of our salary on overpriced stuff at Target.

I think Waldo is one of the most relatable characters I’ve ever read so far. I’m so impressed by Jennette McCurdy’s writing.
