Just finished this and my headās still spinning but I have to say I loved it! Iām not always a big thriller/horror reader, but between Sylvia Moreno Garcia and Isabel CaƱas, I think I may yet be! I borrowed this from the library and itās definitely going on my wishlist to own.
This book was full of such a spooky, unsettling atmosphere - it was the perfect October read. I enjoyed how CaƱas wrote, and how she developed all the characters. Many of them seemed like decent characters at first, and as the book progressed and the stakes heightened we saw who was true, and who was willing to let harm and abuse befall someone they supposedly loved because they wouldnāt speak against the violent practices and unquestioned power of colonial christianity. For that reason it felt poignant and timely, despite being set so far in the past. Musnāt we all be sure and hold power to account, without blindly allowing harm to be done in the name of holiness which may not be holy at all?
I have The Vampires of El Norte on my shelf from a springtime book haul, and am looking forward to reading more of CaƱasā work - this book was a spooky delight, and I adored Alba, ElĆas, MarĆa, and her motherš Without spoiling I just have to say this book also has one of my all time favorite tropes, when done well, and CaƱas did it so well!! If youāre looking for atmospherically haunting, spine-chilling read for spooky season, look no further!

Posting here because I am mostly talking about the Valar. Had a fun conversation with a friend yesterday about Tom Bombadil and Goldberry and who/what they are. We of course are aware of all the various theories floating around out there and don't particularly hold to the ones about Eru Iluvatar, Tolkien self-inserting himself, or the Christian God. So we spoke mostly on the Valar: if the Valar hung around Middle Earth even into the third age and even going so far as to have limited interactions with the peoples, which Valar do you think would have taken the form of Tom and Goldberry? My friend and I were thinking Manwe and Varda
