Post from the The Old Kingdom Collection: Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen, Clariel (Abhorsen 1-4) forum
Read these as a teenager and they still stand the test of time for me and ring in as my #1 favorite series. I do not love as dearly the books of this universe past Abhorsen, though I have read them all, but I do feel Clariel is wonderfully done and absolutely encourage fans of the first three books to read it. In each I find the world built by Garth Nix to be a treat in their uniqueness and incredibly engaging quality.

Magical empires, far-flung galaxies, robotic dystopias, haunted academies—queerness belongs in every world.

If I’d read this as a kid it would have changed my brain chemistry.

Robin Hobb is phenomenal at "showing and not telling", this book has been such a wonderful departure from world building built solely on tedious speeches and internal monologs.

And if so, do you limit yourself to a certain amount of books, or do you go gungho and mood read whatever feels right?
I, myself am a multiple-book reader. I also have adhd, which I feel influences this, as my brain sticks to books that interest me in the current mood. I’m trying to limit myself to 4-5 books, as I’m not able to remember so easily, and end up re-reading a whole lot of books I’ve paused on and didn’t pick up cause my mood didn’t grant it.
Do you experience this too? Neurodivergent or not, I’d love to hear of your stories and experiences x3.
