This rating has been edited after processing the contents of the novel, specifically the scene in which Jenny is attacked, gets into a fight with Temperance and both companions proceeding to consider her petulant for not forgiving the people who attacked her for existing to the point of refusing medical care and abandoning her. That this is "resolved" by an older spirit threatening her physically as well as claiming that she was also being petulant and would regret not forgiving Temperance made it even more sour.

This was uncomfortably handled for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that Jenny is attacked for 'visibly not being human'- something that people have done to marginalized people by dehumanizing and then harming or killing them- and then Temperance is furious at her for not being willing to forgive them as they were "simply being human". Making her be the one who apologizes in the end was outrageous.

The ending as well made me upset. It's a sweet seeming moment of Jenny playing in her lake with Temperance's children. Jenny eats children. Temperance should be respectful and not tempt Jenny, rather than "taming" her so that she's palatable for humans. It really gives rte feeling - particularly since the main villain was also fae- that Temperance has not changed a bit except that she's decided Jenny and the goblin whose name I've forgotten are "not like other fae" and so therefore better or at least safe to be around. The message feels icky instead of heartwarming. I might have just chalked the messaging up to Temperance having flaws if the story didn't double down on the message repeatedly.

The rest of the plot was a little obvious, but generally enjoyable and I liked Jenny as a character.
