this has been my most anticipated read for a very long time, and it did not disappoint At All!
i truly think natalie is one of the most well written unreliable, disturbed narrators in modern fiction.
every thought she has contradicts the last, every opinion she has is damaging. she is so deeply flawed and horrible: “Why is it so hard for you to be kind?”
i was enamoured by her perspective, and even more gripped by the insaneeee plot!
this book is so much more nuanced than ‘oh so she was just crazy the whole time’. it discusses themes of mental illness, faith, child exploitation, traditionalist values, the American dream.
what happens when you realise that your life is not how you imagined it to be?
yesteryear is so fresh, so modern, so Necessary. i have been flooooored by this book and would recommend it to anyone!
in response to the advice natalie is given by her mum, i think from a christian woman’s point of view she could’ve meant the eye of God. doing it for God instead of focusing on one’s self. However, i think because of natalie’s declining mental state, she manipulated her mums (probably) innocent advice and took it to the extreme, completely dissociating from her own actions :)
Please proceed with caution as this post/comments may contain spoilers.
I have a question. What are your thoughts of the mention of religion, specifically Christianity, in this book?
As someone who practices religion but not Christianity, I cannot tell/decide what is the intonation behind the very Christian values that were portrayed in this book. What was the pupose of making Natalie and her family a very Christian family? Was the author trying to mock the "extreme" side of religion? If you are a Christian, how did you feel reading this book?
I feel like this book has a lot of ambiguity in regards to Natalie's character. One example I can think of is, Natalie's mum is a very Christian woman, and one of her advices was "Pretend that someone is consistently watching you so you'll always do your best". I personally genuinely cannot decide if this is good advice or a harmful one.
Please let me know your thoughts as I am very curious!
