This book left me a bit conflicted. It's a bold and ambitious project, and does deliver on most of the claims made in the synopsis. The writing and characters had me captivated with the story, and Nathalie as an unreliable narrator and as a perpetrator and victim of her own narrative is really compelling. I do wish we got more time to sit with Nathalie's day to day in the 1800s sections, though. As someone who grew up catholic I definitely sympathize with Nathalie to some extent, but in no way is she a "good" person. The ending left me a bit conflicted, it dances on the line of being cliche but manages to avoid tipping over the edge. I think the sudden change of pacing between the first 3/4 and the last 1/4 plays a role in this for sure. I think it's definitely worth the read and I understand why it's gotten so much attention, but I did feel myself a tad bit disappointed in how the story was wrapped up

One of my favourite reads this year. I wouldn't call it pleasant necessarily, as it is very emotional, but it is a very poignant exploration of generational trauma, addiction, and purpose through an Iranian lens. The prose is very lyrical and dreamlike, but is still very accessible if that isn't your thing. This is a book I think more people need to read.
