This book had me hooked in the first chapters - the author manages to build up a sense of upcoming doom and absolute dread so well that I couldn’t wait to read the rest of the novel. Unfortunately, the middle part lacked quite a bit of that original creepy feeling - while it has its moments, the atmosphere wasn’t there anymore to me. The writing is very easy to read and understand so it wasn’t that, either - it just sort of felt like the atmosphere kept building and building in the beginning and then it just sort of fizzled out into nothingness for a longer period of time. 95% of the book felt like a jumpscare waiting to happen…but then it just doesn’t happen, and it doesn’t happen, and at some point, it’s not really that scary anymore. There were still moments of suspense sprinkled throughout and it was exciting getting to the end to understand/know the reveal, but for a beginning so exquisitely amazing, the rest just lacked a bit to me personally. All the allusions and implications, just for nothing (Or something very foreseeable) to happen was annoying to read. There was so much potential, and some hints at a much bigger universe, that were never properly explained or even described a bit more that it just felt like so many wasted opportunities. And one more thing, the protagonist didn’t frustrate me completely at first, as it is so often the case with horror book characters. Sure, she made some questionable decisions, but she felt real and human and not just like a character that needs to exist for the story to move along, so that was nice - until she also falls into the typical horror character trope, making every single mistake, checking every box so that by the end, I didn’t really feel sorry for her anymore. All in all, a fun little read, and maybe better for someone that is a Marcus Kliewer fan and doesn’t expect any answers to the thousands questions the book raises.
