    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

It took me a while to gather my thoughts on this one because the ending was expected but devastating nonetheless. This was my first time reading Thomas Mann, and it didn't disappoint. Not only did the story had the perfect amount of social commentary, daily life moments, and some reflecting scenes, but he surprised me by having two characteristics I wasn't expecting from him: the first one is that Mann plays a lot with the unsaid. There are many moments that have very symbolic representations, and Mann doesn't explain them to the reader, he allows us the time to figure it out, and in the meantime, we feel like something big has happened even when it's not named as such. The second thing is that his characters reminded me a bit of Dickens' ones. In such a big family as the Buddenbrook, characters could fade into the background, but Mann actively changes that by giving them quirky traits and really unique personalities.

A part of my heart will forever be with this imperfect family. Mann was a total genius and if you haven't read it yet, you need to
