for the most part these stories were terrifying, extremely cynical and inhabited by downright awful characters. i felt breathless after each of them, and although the author apparently would’ve protested my considerations, i found them more southern than christian (if that makes sense) and strikingly bleak.

my favorites in order of appearance: “the river”, “a stroke of good fortune”, “good country people”, “the displaced person” and “parker’s back”
