From the provocative and challenging to the emotional and quiet, Japanese literary fiction tends to be nuanced, introspective, and minimalistic. These books contain layered cultural commentary and may lean on psychological, surreal, or fantastical elements to convey their message.

A light read that you could finish in one sitting (or one day).
I haven't had much expectation when I pick up this book but nonetheless I find it fun. And it's hard to hold back the tears at some parts of the book. The stories are all heartwarming and heals.
Definitely worth to read if you're on the mood of something light and emotional and hopeful. I hope the story about Kotoko and Kai would continue into the second book too.

Itâs been so long since I managed to finish a book in a day.
This one is unexpectedly bringing tears into my eyes. How hard I tried to not cry at the office!
The stories arenât anything heavy but they are indeed emotional. The one thing Iâd say is that I feel quite unhappy with the outburst of rage from Yeonhwa at the end. Maybe because I donât feel empathy towards her, nor I feel relatable, but really the way she gets mad at Sawol at the cliff was super annoying. Itâd be better if we could get more character depth about her to understand her actions throughout the book, though. And also I feel like the friendship couldâve been explored more instead of just mentioning it at the beginning and the end.
Overall quite a nice and light read.

What a book! This one feels different from all the other historical fictions that Iâve read, as it focuses more on the society that comes together during the hard times.
The idea of helping each other, especially with having a white wedding in the time where itâs almost impossible, is something I find very touching and hopeful.
I also love the characterâs growth especially with Violet. And the fact that the three of the âmainâ characters are all getting their own happy endings are such a great thing.
Overall quite a nice book to read. Donât expect anything heavy or anything, just a light read to warm your heart.

Truly, truly amazing book!!!
The plot, the characterâs depth, even the ending!! I love everything about this book and I can honestly say that itâs one of the books Iâve read this year that I truly enjoyed. It gave me tears at the few last chapters but oh my.
There are some twists that I did not expect in this book that adds to the hinge of it but itâs fine.
Also can I say that I hate Naija for even âmaking sureâ that Hank is in comfort even when they put him in the storage room? Looking after his âmental healthâ? Ew. You did not know what Fen and the others has gone through because of Hank and actually, he deserves it. I even prefer the death of him to be far crueler rather than âjustâ drowning.
Wishing the Salt family happiness after they reached the mainland after. I hope to read a sequel book about this!
