Absolutely phenomenal. incredibly immersive experience, getting the POV of so many characters to flesh out the world, most of whom are very complex, difficult people, but nonetheless deserving of love. Truly devastating book, loved it đ đ

I donât usually use celebrities to depict book characters in my head while reading, but i canât help but picture Staxxx as SZA (specifically in One of Them Days) and Thurwar as Grace Jones (specifically in Conan the Destroyer)

Wilkerson has many good and well supported arguments regarding Americaâs caste system, frequently comparing it to India and Nazi Germany. Lots of great discussions on the origins of the concept of race in New World slavery, racism vs casteism, and how caste permeates into our every day lives. Some chapters were a little repetitive, the subject matter was narrower in scope than I would have liked (focused more so on just the top & bottom castes and at points disregarding those that fall in the middle), some details were over simplified in a way that i felt detracted from the overall arguments, but overall I think this is a good body of work with lots of beneficial thoughts. could have been more anti capitalist imo (this system is perpetuated by money! the elites benefit from a divided working class)
