  • Pagebound diversity in books appreciation!

I’ve heard (from BookRiot mainly) that the algorithms on TikTok and Goodreads heavily favour books by and about white people (so even when end-of-year awards lists are populated by a diverse group of authors, the top books on those sites don’t reflect that!)

I love how PB is completely different. The site and its users are always recommending diverse voices through quests and lists. It would honestly be difficult to only hear about books by one kind of author on here.

Have you found it easier to read diversely since being on here if you previously got your recs from TikTok or Goodreads?

EDIT: as someone who is queer but reads romance like once every two years I didn’t know about the Sourcebooks quest drama before writing this post (I usually just ignore romance quests because I’m less interested in them than in other quests!) I still think this platform is doing a much better job than GR or TikTok but I understand that there is always room for improvement ❤️

  • what e-reader do you have?

    hi everyone,

i'm finally looking into getting an e-reader instead of lugging around library books in my bag. i’m looking to buy one and done, a device that is worth the money and will last until it literally dies.

i'd love some feedback on these specific points:

    • longevity & battery life
    • interface speeds to avoid a laggy experience
    • libby access + ability to import epubs/pdfs
    • portability! (small enough to bring in a standard purse but bigger than a phone screen)
    • warm light settings to reduce eye strain
    • idk about color vs. b&w 🤔 i don't necessarily need color ink, but i'm open to it if it doesn't hurt the battery life or eye comfort (might get into webtoons or manga again)
    • idk if i should look into one with page turning buttons or just buy a bluetooth rig to connect

would love to hear what you guys use and if you have any "regret" buys i should avoid. please lmk! thanks! 😊

    Influenced

I fell victim to influencing and bought this book today. I've seen wildly different reviews for it, so I'm excited to read.

I got married at 20, have 3 kids, and live in the countryside -- but, like, in a leftist, non-religious , "we eloped and told no one" kind of way?

Lmao I'm anyway interested to see the commentary on having kids and getting married young -- but through the lens of religion.

My guess is I'll love it, but time will tell.

Last Stop (The Dead's Unfinished Business, #1)

    Gloria Oliver

The heist was a deadly trap and sealed her fate. She finds an unexpected sanctuary harboring supernatural dangers. Can she find a way to stay alive? Daniela Martinez is terminally screwed. She was the top pickpocket of her group until a jealous rival used her partner to trick them into an unsanctioned job and then ratted them out, knowing there would be lethal consequences. Dani has no choice but to flee and strive to defy the odds so she doesn't end up in the gutter as an unidentified victim of murder. Seeking refuge in an old Japanese restaurant, her relief is short-lived as she comes face-to-face with her partner's newly made ghost. If Dani won't agree to work there and help departed souls with their unfinished business, she will meet her predestined pain-filled end. Can Dani learn to aid lost souls rather than become one of the dead? Last Stop is the shocking first book of the Dead's Unfinished Business supernatural suspense series. If you like feisty underdogs, pulse-pounding fantastical scenarios, and juggling between reality and the supernatural, then you'll love Gloria Oliver's enthralling adventure.

As someone who has studied Criminology, the comments made by the man from the Yard are so interesting. The comments he makes on the eye setting immediately made me think of Physiognomy and Lombroso's theories. (Which we now consider outdated, inaccurate and even racist). And the comment on the "need for crime" could be linked to Strain theory (which also has its criticism cause it doesn't explain why rich people commit crimes such as money laundering). But overall, really interesting stuff to read about in a fiction. The guy isn't making random comments, this is genuinely stuff people believed in.

I'm still waiting for the women in the book to do anything more useful than crying. Why bother adding them into the book at all? This could've just been a boys only hangout and nothing would've changed.
