A unique, YA magical mystery novel. I did love that the central conflict did not come frome the main character's parents as so many YA novels seem to go. The magic in the world was unique too...a little more than magical realism, but not quite. It's a quick, fun read!

A little unsure going into this based on the trigger warning but I do love that this book has a prescribed playlist!

Just a quick moment of appreciation for the complexity of the world ML Wang imagined and is so brilliantly revealing to us as each page flips...religion, politics, social class, magic. I can't get enough!

Loving that magic in this world is just accepted by everyone. Also neat that we have a magical teenage heroine who seems to have a healthy relationship with her parents rather than an orphan or a rebel. Excited to see where this goes!

Fun and easy detective novel. A good palette cleanser after a lot of tough reads. I'll try the next one some time! Content warning...some animal cruelty near the end though.

I wish I counted how many times these 1980's detectives called their answering service. Really makes you appreciate a good cell phone!

Linus seems like the typical person who is afraid of his surroundings, submissive in an oppressive work environment. The greyness of the working world is contrasted by the magic and the orphanage, where for now the children seem happy. I still don't know what to expect.

This book is SO straightforward so far and it's just what I needed after reading some dense books. Feels like small town gossip and I'm here for it.

I am in awe of the way the author so masterfully wove so many characters together over literally hundreds of years in less than 400 pages. Inspiring! Hope I have the chance to read it again in the future.

I'm going to have to marinate on this one for a bit. I couldn't put it down, but I do feel where the book ended wasn't what I was expecting. Also guessing a second read of this might be pretty enlightening to the story itself. But who has got time for re-read?

I had it in my head that this was a polarizing book that people either loved or hated and I came out somewhere in the middle. Maybe I'd get a little more out of it if I knew more about Greek mythology.
