Soft for romance, brave for horror, chaotic because I’m a mood reader.

"Whenever I was reaching my wits' end, I would pause for a moment and do you know what I would do? I would imagine I was being watched. It's lonely you know. Housework. But it felt a bit less lonely when I pretended I had a little audience sitting on the couch with me. Watching me vacuum or take out the trash. Cheering me on."

These quotes also made me think about today’s “tradwife” content. Housework stops being just housework once there’s an audience watching and validating it.

I think I’ve read so many relationships built on drama, miscommunication, and people constantly hurting each other that I honestly forgot how lovely it can be to read about characters who genuinely listen, communicate, and try to protect each other’s feelings. Cat Sebastian reminded me of that in the best way possible. The relationship dynamic was incredibly comforting, and the progression from coworkers to friends to roommates to boyfriends felt very natural and carefully developed.

I do wish the story had a little more momentum, though. I kept expecting a bigger emotional payoff or a stronger central conflict. There were moments involving the police plotline and other tensions, but they never fully landed for me, so the pacing occasionally felt a bit too calm.

This was also my first journalism-centered book, and I learned that the theme itself just may not be for me. It wasn’t bad at all — it simply didn’t capture my interest the way I hoped it would. I think I would’ve connected to it more if the journalism angle had tied more closely into the romance or character dynamics somehow.

Still, the things this book did well, it did really well. I adored the apartment atmosphere, the friendships, the support system between the characters, and especially the way New York felt alive throughout the story.
