Thank you for Clementine, Samuel, Stetson, Jessa, Junebug, and the little angel we haven’t named yet.

^ the way my face is gonna be stuck reading about this woman by the end of this book

half of these names are fairly common albeit very stereotypically christian but JUNEBUG and STETSON?? it's so spot on, it hurts. what's everybody's bets on what she'd name the new baby? i'm putting $200 on mary or neveah.

“That year the rains had come so gently that the Salinas River did not overflow. A slender stream twisted back and forth and it’s broad bed of gray sand, and the water was not milky with silt but clear and pleasant. The willows that grow in the river bed were well leafed, and the wild blackberry vines were thrusting their spiking new shoots along the ground.”

Steinbeck is such an atmospheric writer. This book is secretly a love letter to California. This reminds me of my solo road travels going up the Eastern Sierra. The valleys, the lakes, the rivers, the creeks, the forests, the mountains, even the desert. I can smell it from his writing alone.
