I really enjoyed 2 out of the 3 stories. The first story, "The Ardennes Forest", without knowing anything about the timeline of when Harpman wrote it versus "I Who Have Never Known Men", really put me back in a similar headspace. I'm sure it and The Ardennes Forest share common themes due to the political and economical realities of when they were written than necessarily inspiring one or the other. At any rate, very similar overall impressions. Very compelling storytelling.
The second story, "The Outcast", surprised me the most because it's more different from the other books I've read (the only other works translated into English, to date "I Who Have Never Known Men", and "Orlanda") yet feels familiar. It may be the most thought-provoking of the three stories.
The third story, "The Broom Closet" was my least favorite. It shares some of the same multiple-persona-like storytelling found in "Orlanda", but I found its ideas less interesting and my overall impression wasn't as positive.

Maybe on another read of this whole series I can better take this in, process it, and compare/contrast in all the ways Absolution changes what we have been told about Area-X and the first expedition(s). I adore the Area-X lore and the way in which VanderMeer's words wash over you, slowly revealing depth/meaning through osmosis. You gain semantic absorption in ways I haven't found in other authors.
This installment required a lot more patience. You definitely need to be in the right mindset to truly appreciate it.
