I think this ultimately fell short. It started with an amazing premise where I was expecting an ancient china honeypot espionage drama that quickly turned into a surface-level romance drama. Ok, sure. But even with the suspension of disbelief, some of the character choices were simply odd - conflicting even (and not in a way that gets at the human psycho-emotional complexity that would make for interesting conversation). There were some beautifully written scenes (The Palace of Beautiful Women for one!) but towards the end, there was way more telling that showing. Lots of exposition. Overall lacked necessary depth considering some of the claims around morality, conflict, and society it attempts to make. Entertaining enough though.

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

A Song to Drown in Disappointment.

I was promised espionage, danger, and tension but instead, I got a vaguely pretty girl and a cast of men acting like they’ve never seen a face before.

The FMC’s entire personality is “beautiful and occasionally confused.” Everyone loves her for it. The MMC is equally shallow. He sees her once and apparently forgets what critical thinking is. Their “connection” has all the emotional depth of an HR onboarding video.

Was she magically beautiful? Cursed beautiful? Model-in-the-real-world beautiful? No one knows. The book just keeps screaming, “She’s pretty!” like that explains geopolitics, loyalty, and love. Spoiler: it does not.

And that’s the real tragedy; there was potential here. The setup had room for real espionage, manipulation, moral conflict. But instead of letting her do anything, the author made her a prop in her own story. By the end, I had questions, zero feelings, and a mild sense of betrayal.

Not the worst thing I’ve read but painfully average, emotionally hollow, and way too self-impressed with its own prettiness.

Otherwise? Throw me in the river. I’d rather drown.
