the show definitely made the correct choice by making this book the secondary story of the show, it has already got very repetitive and boring--certainly wouldn't have been able to carry a whole season as the main story.

A Sea Change: A Shadowhunters novella

and that concludes the last hours trilogy. i am quite proud of myself for powering through this series as quickly as i did--especially when i can now confidently say this is my least favourite trilogy within the shadowhunters world. i don't necessarily think it is bad... it's just quite slow and i didn't really enjoy the central plot of this one. tatiana and belial were kinda annoying villians (and somewhat comical) and i was not at all threatened by what they were doing (though that may also be to do with this being a prequel but also unlike the infernal devices, this story--you can tell--was somewhat last minute planned/added as nothing here really seemed to be referenced in other trilogy's. the story went out of its way to call back things as to insert itself and give the illusion of being planned from that start).
the cast grew on me, though i can still confidently say that alastair and thomas are still my favourite part--and not so closely followed by lucie and jesse (i kinda lost interest in them lowkey). i can firmly say now that i despise the love triangle of it all and i am not satisfied with matthew's ending. like. i know romance isn't the ending for characters but his arc does not feel complete to me, even without that.
i will say, now that im done this trilogy, i feel like with the amount of loghtwoods in this story i am confused why they weren't more central to the story. anna especially felt like a very underwritten character to me. i also think christopher and thomas' bond could've been more developed and don't even get me started on the sisters that quite literally existed in name only. i did lowkey find christopher's death unnecessary and feel like (don't shoot me here) matthew would've made more sense to be killed. not that i WANT him dead, but i feel like his arc would've felt more concluded if he were a casualty in the war. christopher had little screen time until this book, which now feels like it was only written to make his death sad--otherwise readers probably would've just shrugged at it (and i also think i just wouldve liked to see his and graces romance develop).
TLDR: i have said it once and I'll say it again--cassandra clare needs a harsher editor, who isn't afraid to cut things down.
goodluck to anyone reading my muddled brain dump of a review.

A hundred pages in and not a lot has happened so far. I suppose that's the price of having a large cast of characters readers genuinely care about: Checking in with all of them takes up quite a few pages, and especially toward the beginning of a novel, when the plot has barely started unfolding, the result is a rather slow paced story.

Thomastair are my favourite, ugh. Thomas' stupid little fire message (Cheers, Christopher!) made me laugh out loud. He's so adorably flustered and Alastair, in contrast, is so confident and put together. Those two have been my favourite part of this entire series since Chain of Gold and I wish we got more than just handful of chapters of their interactions. Don't get me wrong, I think The Last Hours features Cassie's best cast of characters yet and I am deeply interested in several of them, but oh, what I would not give for more Thomastair.
