  • pagebound’s timezone??

Is PB’s timezone different than the timezone a user is in? Idk if I worded that right but basically I posted something and then saw on my profile’s points that it said I’d posted it it on Sept 14th even though it’s not the14th yet where I am

  • What is the highest number of books you have read in a year?

I was wandering, what was the highest number of books you read in a year? And why? In which year did u hit that amazing number?

I read so many books this year, the last years it was so dry, no reading or like up to mabe 4 books because of my studies at university. But during my school time - high school or Gymnasium in germany- I read so many books. I read during classes when the teacher sucked or I allready knew the stuff we had to study and so I read up to 80 books a year because I read so much during class.

I think the most books in a year where around 85 books, I never hit that number again the years after. I mean I set goals but in the end I am just happy if i managed to read anything.

So just wandering, what was your highest number and, was it a good or a bad reading year?

Would the MC of your current read, read your current read?

I'll use my last read as I don't have a current read at the moment. The MC kind of inspired the question as I was thinking over how much I kind of hated how "above it all" he thinks of himself. Granted, he did recognise out loud in the book that this disdain comes from his insecurity and lack of self-esteem, but it didn't make it any less annoying.

I feel like that kind of attitude shows up in a lot of contemporary novel protagonists. Their voice particularly, where they position themselves as sharper than everyone, making snarky observations about people in a way that should show their worldly insight but only comes across, to me at least, as being mean to be superior. These people are hard to please, so what kind of book would they even like? And that sort of led to asking, would Dan like the story of his own life and how it was written?

Anyway, I think the answer would be no. He would probably make fun of the MC who peaked in gifted and talented classes only to work in an admin role. And he would definitely make fun of the prose for trying too hard to sound funny, in a cool detached way.

  • Do you keep every book you read?

Physical book readers - I was chatting with some bookish friends and we were talking about managing shelf space.

Are you the type of reader to keep all your books, or do you unhaul? If you unhaul, do you do it as you read or do you do it maybe once a season?

How else do you manage your space?

I generally don’t like to rate or review nonfiction; specifically memoirs because it just feels weird to me to put a rating on someone’s life. However, I also think it’s important to acknowledge how much courage it takes to share your story to the media. This one in particular is one that I’ve only seen from outside perspectives so it was interesting to hear how everything actually happened. Massive props to Sherri for being able to put this out there.

Okay, I loved this book! I liked how it seems older than it actually is, and sometimes, the characters' reactions to certain, hugely important situations are unintentionally hilarious. It's not supposed to be funny, as it's modeled after the Gothic romance concept, but seriously, Mrs. de Winter can be downright comical. There are, of course, the appropriate moments of suspense and mystery, so that's all good too.

    DNF at 53%

    I’m sorry ……

I DNFd this two years ago and I thought I was just not in the right place so I came to try it again. I thought it would be fine but obviously not 😔😔

I usually love Holly Jackson. The Reappearance of Rachel Price is one of my favorite thrillers and I eat up AGGGTM forever, but this one just was NOT for me

At a sentence level, this book was weird. It was clearly meant to be a choice in character voice, but in the end it didn’t read like voice, it just read like the line editor didn't do their job I fear … and it sucks because I know it could’ve been done well how she intended it but it did not land. I also think I have issues with the dialogue in this book because there were several moments where I was like “ohhh…. so people definitely don’t talk like that”

I also just didn’t really vibe with the premise. They were stuck in an RV but it felt so anticlimactic ?? like tell me why it felt like these people who are seconds away from dying seem to have no sense of urgency?? And they’re just kinda collectively dumb and it made me so mad in the worst way possible

I think this one just wasn’t for me and I think if you’re more willing to suspend disbelief and you like the writing style you’ll be fine, but imo it doesn’t read like a holly Jackson book and if you start it and want to DNF you should probably just DNF

I feel like her inability to stop comparing and to stop thinking of Rebecca is not completely her fault. There are things people around her do that contribute to her insecurity. What is the purpose of telling her how Rebecca did things? Of she wants the vase somewhere else then that should be it.

Literally everything that I want in a fantasy book! The plot is fast paced, the prose is engaging, the characterisation is precise and there's no fluff. it's adventurous, smart and witty. I'm especially impressed by so many fantasy elements that can fit in this book without being out of place. The conclusion of this book is very satisfying and can be a standalone yet still makes me crave for more, which is pretty rare as authors mostly rely on cliffhangers for demands for second book. Nevertheless, I am excited to delve into the second book!!

I picked this up at a local used bookstore thinking it’s finally time for me to read this classic, and I’m already excited by the foreword and introduction. The foreword writer claimed in 2005 that Orwell was misguided in his belief that many nations would fall victim to totalitarianism… if only he could see the trajectory the U.S. is on right now. It’s an especially relevant time to read dystopian classics, I believe.

Du Maurier's ability to paint a picture with words so carefully picked is amazing- you can imagine yourself in the narrator's position so vividly. She writes so fluidly you almost don't realise how seamlessly she fluctuates between first, second, and third person to further enable reader immersion. Just wonderful!
