To fully understand the background and context of this book, you'll need to know about The Iran-Iraq War, The Gulf War, and of course The Iraq War also known as the Second Gulf War. You'll likely be lost and only understand this novel at a base level otherwise.
And before you're like "Polter, you're always talking about the Cold War, does this have anything to do with the Cold War?" The answer is yes 🙄 again

So i haven't actually read the great gatsby, Local Heavens is my first exposure to the full story. Are the birds- Owl Eyes, Pigeon, Parrot, and Penguin- are they a reference or allusion to something in the original text?
Reading this does really make me want to read The Great Gatsby though lol! I may have to reread this once ive actually read it.
