So I don't know who came up with this game but it's like coming up with superpowers that has no use at all. Like for eg: You can scream like a banshee but it only works if you're naked.
So imagine your protagonist had a useless superpower. What would it be?
I'll go first: she has eidetic memory but only with children's books.
Get creative!

The ending made me upset on so many levels. But...this book was written really well. very atmospheric, creepy, meloncholly. I found myself refelcting after every chapter.

I'm still upset at how this book played out especially the ending. However, it was not as bad as my initial reaction made it out to be. I still have many issues with it. But I did enjoy the magic system !

The Fall Readalong has officially started! Check the Discuss page to see the book picks & badge. If this is your first Pagebound readalong, click the purple info icon next to the Fall Readalong header on Discuss for more info. A few reminders:
This season, a few of the Top Contributors are hosting unofficial readalongs in their Quests. These are meant to help build community in the Quest, and encourage everyone to work towards the next badge level together! You will not get a special badge for participating in these, and the convo should still happen in the book's forum, not the quest forum. Here's a list of Quests hosting a readalong; might be a good time to join one of these Quests if something catches your eye ;)
As for product updates, we've made some quality of life improvements since our last check-in (example: search taking you to Books instead of Users when you press enter) but our largest improvement has been in site performance. Response times were getting pretty crazy with all the new traffic, and we're now consistently at low response times :) We also started beta testing the app! Still working through bugs so it's perfect for launch, but progress is well under way. We're hoping for a September launch but ofc will depend on how beta testing goes this month.
Lastly, we've been seeing such amazing convos in the book forums and the Pagebound Club. It's amazing to have a community this thoughtful, nuanced, and respectful. You all make Pagebound such an incredible community, so thank you!
Happy Reading, Jennifer & Lucy đđ

I struggled to enjoy this book entirely. And I say that as a fan of Babel. I'm literally in denial after finishing it. Admittedly, the parts where our characters are talking through logic puzzles and things like that slowed the pace of the book down a bit. I felt like it was a lot of rambelling. Someone somewhere said this dense academic set up worked for Babel but not in Katabasis and I couldn't agree more. I wanted more from these types of exchanges between charaters or side characters. I attended one of R.F Kuang's signing events and she did say that some chapters are set up like they're a page ripped from a textbook. Even with this understanding, I still feel like it took me out of the story and again, slowed the pace of the book. However, the overarching themes in Katabisis and the journey itself for Alice and Peter made me really enjoy this book. Alice having revelations about herself and the world she exists in was refreshing to experience. I enjoyed the side characters they met along the way (shout out to Elspeth and Gradus). R.F Kuang is a smart and brilliant writer still.
