Maybe it’s because I recently read Empire of Pain (if you haven’t, it’s a great history of the Sackler family and the rise of opioids), but I’m finding that thus far, the storytelling is suffering a little from Kingsolver clearly having a (obviously very correct) Point to make about the opioid epidemic. It feels much more allegorical than character driven, which makes sense given it’s based on Dickens, but makes the characters feel a bit hollow to me.
May DNF this one even though I know it’s very loved!
