Delightful collection of essays on soccer history and culture. Will be handing someone this next time they ask why people have beef with Argentina.

Can’t wait to tell my mother, a Netherlands supporter, her national team will never win because the country is too happy.

Appetite: A Novel

While cast in front of the drama of Jack the Ripper murders, this is more a novel about finding home and community. The loss of her father drives Caroline into London to find her brother and a place to be happy. Caroline is at times a hard protagonist for me to like in a lot of ways. She is afraid of so many people around her. She assumes the worst of most everyone around her in turn except the police. Yet it comes off, for me, as more learning to be better in a community. The supernatural elements did feel second place to a lot of the novel and sometimes even third hand to the story being told. A way of connecting disparate people, an excuse at community where one was already formed. But the community around Caroline for as much as she is uncomfortable with it so much of the time, was a big part of what I enjoyed in this book.

A lovely read and beautiful character design. This was not particularly deep or complex story telling. It often felt more like reading a children's fairy tale than anything else. But the individual designs were truly fun to look at. More about the art than a plot and that is fine. Perhaps because it was a one shot, a lot of the story telling side does feel a little flat. There is not a lot of space for expanding on personalities or relationships that you can tell Mars cares about. Overall though, a nice simple read that is again great to look at.
