I am already so emotionally attached to these characters. I have tears in my eyes.

So far this book is a LOT of tell and not a lot of show. Not really getting the hype.

Not gonna lie, the first 25% of the book was rough and I almost DNF. Glad I pushed through, though! The payoff was definitely there 😚

As much as I am enjoying the characters and the plot, this book is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long for the story it's trying to tell. Sometimes the lengthy descriptions of every single tiny detail, thought, and conversation feel less like powerful writing/prose and more like an Entmoot. The audiobook for this is 24 hours long with the first six hours being entirely exposition and build-up. I am now six hours into the actual war (12 hours of listening total so far), and I fear another six to ten hours of war is simply too much war, even for a war novel! Not to mention that there is still another two to six hours of post-war after that.... Even if they were to end the war now, what could they be possibly talking about for twelve whole hours???? I was really excited at first to find a book over 20 hours long because I love long, plot heavy books, but I feel that this book could be half (or even 2/3rds) as long as it is and still be a powerful, descriptive story. I'm not sure I have the mental fortitude to continue this book knowing I'm only half-way. I may have to come back in a year and pretend I'm reading the sequel or something.
