i learned a lot of new information, i went in completely unaware of what the plot was. From a literary perspective, i didn't know we were not in Bob the drag queen's pov until Darnell's name was mentioned. I liked how easily i got immersed into the story. It didn't feel full though, it was too surface level. What it did encourage me to do is look up more information about the historical figures mentioned since my American education is lacking in its own history.

Idk if this is way too niche but… did anyone else notice the lack of contractions?! It kind of threw me from the first page to read “there is a wooden coffee table” and “they are going for a minimalist thing” etc — such a little detail but it feels so at odds with the tone of the writing. Plus I knew Bob narrated the audiobook and just couldn’t imagine him talking like that! Sooo I had to listen to the audiobook sample, and I feel like he’s totally throwing contractions in there! I can’t decide if I should switch to audio or if I’ll be able to like mentally add contractions in my head while I read 😅
