I know it’s a fantasy setting of imperial China, but the presentism and wipe out of palace rules is really grating on me

wondering why the author chose to use “empress-in-waiting” instead of crown princess. I mean, no one calls the prince “emperor-in-waiting”.

in Chinese history, the empress-in-waiting is called 太子妃/东宫妃/储妃, which all translates to “crown princess”.

On the usage of real Chinese in this | Thoughts from 15% (page 58)

I’m curious about how people who aren’t familiar with Chinese feel about the inclusion of Chinese hanzi/characters and their pinyin romanizations as a writing system in this, given that it’s a second world! Does knowing that they’re real take away from your ability to enjoy or suspend your disbelief? (If you can read the Chinese, feel free to chime in as well—would love to hear all perspectives honestly)

As someone who was born to a Chinese family and can read the Chinese Tao has included, I find it pretty jarring, but I’m wondering how other people see it generally if they don’t necessarily know the language

Included so far (and not relevant to the plot) have been: 鳥/Niao, 山/Shan, 木/Mu, 魚/Yu, 女/Nü, written using this exact character + pinyin combo
