”The Mennonite watches the enshadowed dark before them as it is reflected to him in the mirror over the bar. He turns to them. His eyes are wet, he speaks slowly. The wrath of God lies sleeping. It was hid a million years before men were and only men have power to wake it. Hell aint half full. Hear me. Ye carry war of a madman’s making onto a foreign land. Ye’ll wake more than the dogs.

This book is fascinating in the sense I’ve never read something that feels equal parts poetic and so grotesque. I’m currently listening to RDR2 campfire ambience and I’ve never been more locked tf in before

The introduction of Captain White does so much with so little. As with much of the dialogue/prose, White's conscription of the Kid is blunt, brutal, and efficient if not disorienting. But it is his description of the "race of degenerates" fit to be dealt with that truly stands out. The kid, thus far, is indiscriminate, a vessel of violent potential. The captain, in just a paragraph of dialogue, unleashes a deeper hatred, putrid layers of antiblack racism (i.e. "A mongrel race little better" than Black slaves, who remain at the lowest rung of caste), colonial mindsets (the "white man's burden" of governing a "people manifestly incapable of governing themselves"), and the inevitability of white systemic violence ("others come in to govern for them").

The Captain's near-hypnotic assertion that Americans need to "take their country seriously" and act regardless of the "mollycoddles in Washington" I'm sure has never had any real-life moment of consequence ever at all.
