I dnf after he first three pages. The writing style just is not it. The same literary tools used every paragraph? And I do feel like you can be hyper-descroptive sometimes 😅
For a book that big to be this annoying at the beginning, I'm not in the mood for the effort.

I'm not one to annotate books because I feel like it takes me out of the story, but more and more lately, I have felt the urge to do it. However, I have been reading library books, so I want to ask the people who annotate, how do you do it with library books? Do you write your favourite quotes and comments in a journal? Do you buy a version for yourself if you want to do it?

Lol I thought I was just too young or not smart enough to appreciate this novel in middle school, but no, it just is what it is.

A cute little story. I found myself my interested and touched by Tobias's relationships to literally every other character but the love interest, especially with Bramble.
I would say the stakes were higher and the mood was darker than a typical cozy novel, but personally this is the level of cozy I prefer. However, I don't have any interest in reading the second book.

Coates's writing is pretty...and also wordy. This book is definitely part love-letter to the craft of writing. I could also tell by the flow that he has ADHD. That being said, reading this makes me feel the same watching a Hank Green video does: I appreciate the content and message, but the delivery is overwhelming to the senses which makes me not really enjoy consuming it even though I'm not in disagreement with what's being said. I appreciate his humility and thoroughly explaining the error in his past writings.
I think this book could be better enjoyed if one views the first 3 parts as one long preface to part 4, however. Having the parts separated the way the were almost made this book feel incohesive and meandering at some parts, especially the third part.
also -.25 stars for the notes page containing a link instead of listing out sources.
Overall, I do share the sentiment that part 4 itself makes this read worthwhile.
