Dazai’s insight into a teenage girl’s psyche caught me by surprise. I also didn’t expect this short story to leave such a deep impression; if teenage me came across it, she might have felt seen and somewhat comforted, but also heartbroken. Adult me is going to cry just a little :)
Nobody in the world understood our suffering. In time, when we became adults, we might look back on this pain and loneliness as a funny thing, perfectly ordinary, but—but how were we expected to get by, to get through this interminable period of time until that point when we were adults?e

Banana Yoshimoto, the woman that you are 😮💨
did i expect to fully river-down-my-face cry over a letter of a fictional woman to her fictional son? no. did i cry? YES
beautiful prose that help you fully immerse into the story. “kitchen” was a bit more up my alley than “moonlight shadow” maybe because of how big of a part, in my opinion, the kitchen has in our lives.
on a personal note: i should probably stop reading books that deal with grief for some time 😶 while they do feel heartwarming and reassuring(?), they also stir up some memories i’d rather not think about.
