Down With the (Female) Sickness
Books that highlight the ways gender roles have harmed women, often through assigning an inherent wickedness to the entire gender and using suffering or punishment to āliberateā women from our wickedness. Starting with The Yellow Wallpaper, in which Victorian standards for women expected purity and perfection. Imperfection, whether it be postpartum depression or strong opinions, was labeled as female hysteria and treated in a way that only further harmed women. Exploring empowerment & autonomy

Surprisingly good for a book that takes place mostly in one room. The way Sarahās trauma and past were slowly revealed as similar events occurred in the present kept me hooked. I was especially interested in the medieval religious views of the roles of men vs women. It reminded me a bit of the yellow wallpaper (and sort of The Grace Year), not only in a woman being isolated, but in the strict gender roles, and in the way that expectations for women to be pure actually harm them. In both stories women have an inherent wickedness assigned to them that only some sort of suffering can cleanse them of. The wickedness is of course just simple human things, such as feeling anything less than content with her role in life or having normal desires. Itās another great book that highlights the expectations that have historically been placed on women, how those expectations have evolved, and the damage they cause.
