Beautifully written prose with interesting insights into the nature of human objectivity and the relation between nature and man. More of a character study than an exploration of the world at large, but I think VanderMeer handles it well enough. There was something lacking that made it so I wasn't 100% invested, but can't exactly place my finger on what.

Thought it was perfectly fine. Ending made sense, the twist worked well enough. There were parts that dragged and some moments I don't feel like added to the overall story being told. Pros & cons weight pretty equally but I just wasn't as invested as I could've been.
Heard the audiobook is a better experience, this is short enough that I may come back and experience it that way.

This is the epitomy of "I'm going to end things with my boyfriend! What's the worst that can happen?" (a finger on the monkey's paw curls)
