In the new year, Iâm going to read a book from every genre and rate it five stars. This means that Iâll have to experiment with different books until I find one that I think is worth those five stars.
I wanted to make this a challenge for me because I donât usually read outside of my limited genres, (nor do I typically give five stars) which will let me experiment and learn more about my reading preferences and if theyâve changed since I was a kid.
That is my literary goal for 2026, and Iâll try my hardest to meet it.
Whatâs your goal?

I am shocked to see how highly rated this book is tbh. Aside from the fact that the paradoxes are never explored, let alone explained, the lack of worldbuilding was so striking. I find this to be the case with many contemporary so called fantasy books which prioritise romance over the fantasy aspect.
I didn't buy the romance either. I think the book was trying to break gender stereotypes but it actually reinforced them all all the same. If there is an attempt to go beyond stereotypical behaviours, this book failed at it miserably. Anyway... The romance... Why should I care about them? Both Una and Owen felt so extremely shallow. Don't get me wrong, I think there was serious potential in their respective developments in theory but the execution was horrible. Owen's relationship with his father could be a killer of a dynamic but nope, it had to take a backseat. And the thing is, I think the author tried to do something with it but the issue is the author was trying to do so many things all at once. Romance, determinism, time travel, racism, xenophobia... Yes, these themes can be explored simultaneously but they weren't explored. They were simply packed and branded and displayed on a shelf. What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that this book was so much 'tell' and not at all 'show'. Like, let me deduce what is being worked here ok???
The prose started off quite well but got old very quickly because it was trying to be so dramatic all the time. I rolled my eyes so many times because sometimes when I read certain sentences, all that played inside my head was those booktok videos.
Anyway... I can't comment on anyone's taste, if you enjoyed this book, I'm glad you found something you enjoyed.
Quality-wise, this simply is not it.

How do I add a book to my library thatâs not on good reads? Cause itâs not on there I canât use the Missing a book? Feature on search. Is there a way to add the book to my library or is there nothing I can do. (The book is If Queers Weren't Meant to Have Kids ... by Karina Natt and Narelda Jacobs)

I have to say that it didnât live up to my expectations. Sure the prose is really good but beyond that, there was nothing that fascinated me. I mean I guess it is nice that it is some sort of a slice of life take in a world like that, a story about people trying their best given their circumstances but I think this book is overrated. Not a bad book but definitely not something Iâd consider a masterpiece. I didnât like the characters not because I didnât like them as people (there are plenty of characters that I hate but love the way that they are constructed), I didnât care about them at all. Tommy was very bland imo and the love story was just meh, if it could be called that. Maybe the point was to make us think about the time gone but I never cared about the characters and was never convinced of their âloveâ for one another so I never gave the alternative scenario much thought, if any.
