I chose this book for a bookclub with my friends because I really liked the author's first book, The teller of small fortunes. Although it was def not a terrible choice and overall I really enjoyed Charity's shenanigans, it was a bit lacking in the character development. I would have absolutely loved to also have Aurelia's point of view and def a bit more in depth romantic exploration. Overall, I loved the atmosphere that the book created, it was cozy and peaceful. It's worth 100% curling up during a rainy day and diving into Charity and Aurelia's adventures.

"We're the only part of the known universe that knows it's in a universe. We know we are circling a star that will one day engulf us. We're the only species that knows it has a temporal range. "
I was at work when I read this particular essay and phrase, and I know that in a way it might seem like a logical thing, but it hit me like a truck. I was stunned in place for a couple of seconds and looking at the people around me (you know, like in one of those slow motion movie scenes) and just having an urge to make them aware as well and for them to be just as stunned as I was by the epiphany. Until now I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised by the book and the essays, and it feels more like having a conversation rather than just reading about someone's thoughts.

There is so much about this book I loved. It was cute, the premise was interesting, I liked the idea of this magical system and the look we get into that world. However, I have VERY mixed feelings about the ending. I waited a while to write a review, hoping to sort through those feelings, but I am still very divided and don't think that will change.
Without spoiling, the reason I am divided is that I get the ending and why it happens the way it does. Cause it makes sense based on the story, but despite that, there is a major component to how everything gets resolved that I personally dislike in books. So that lowered how I view the book overall, which sucks, because it was so good up to that point. It mixed a lot of things I enjoyed; it was touching while remaining funny, the circumstances can get a bit ridiculous in the best way, and there is a lovely found family element at play.
So, I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it, but I do think that the end will be hit or miss with people. So yeah, be prepared to love the journey, but potentially dislike the destination if you read this book.

Whoa, this is the first book that I've finished this year and not going to lie, the place I've been reading it in is quite similar to the same feeling that the Batty Hole Inn offers Sera and its quirky inhabitants. To be honest, although I really loved Sera's character development and realisation that the found family is truly what was important all along, the side characters really made the whole story for me, from Luke's stoic walls being taken down, Posy feeling comfortable to be herself without people trying to change the way she does things, Nicholas and the protectiveness I've felt when reading his, albeit short, background episode, Jasmine and her kindness, Roo Roo and all of the love he contains in his lil skeleton self, and of course Clemmie and Matilda, my favorite comedic duo.
Overall, a truly cozy book about found family and about realising that sometimes the true love and happiness does not hide in the things we think we lost, but in the things we earn through kindness and love and community. Def recommend for a found family, magical cozy read 🐓

"I think we all deserve our favorite dinner when we've had a bit of a low day." Jasmine smiled.
Although it's not something out of the ordinary, this phrase kind of punched me in the face. It just reinforced the feeling of slow living and of softness towards oneself when we've had hard days, emotionally or physically and I think it's a beautiful reminder and put it in the spotlight a bit.
