This is the first time that a book has made me feel enraged and consitently preturbed while still deserving a 5 star rating. I mean, the point of the book is that everything that takes place IS infuriating. It's disgusting and heartbreaking, but also inspiring. The women in this book are so resilient. And the fact that it's based off a real dark time in history made me even more uncomfortable whilst I was reading it. Especially now, when true-crime media is contuing to boom. We are like sharks, in all honesty, scrambling to get the most gruesome parts of a story; we also buy what we're sold - the idea of a 'charming and genius' killer who in reality was a failing, impotent man that was simply aided by the system. This book also reminded me of the importance of remembering the names of the victims better than that of the perpetrator. I'm glad they didn't say his name once. I was appalled enough without it.
As for the characters, Knoll's descriptions were truly vivid and complex. She managed to convey so many different characters better in 373 pages than others try and fail to achieve in 500.
